The Tree That Owns Itself

This beloved Athens landmark has a unique history behind it. Located at the corner of Finley and Dearing Streets, the white oak tree has been deeded ownership of itself and the land within 8 feet of its base. According to local legend, the tree was planted in the 1800s by Colonel William H. Jackson, a professor at the University of Georgia. Jackson so loved the majestic oak that before he died, he deeded the tree ownership of itself to preserve its existence. This quirky piece of Athens history is a must-see photo op!
